An absolutely wonderful couple got married last weekend and I felt honored to be a part of their big day.  I had worked with these two for months planning their flowers and was so thrilled everything turned out radiant despite the un-welcomed heat wave.

Travis and Meghan were awesome because they were looking for unique floral decor and specifically stated they did not want your typical run of the mill flowers.  PERFECT!  This is what Hide and Seek does!  Their wedding was rustic celebrating shades of green, navy blue, texture through foliage, flower and fabric, vintage milk glass vases and antique cobalt blue medicine and wine bottles.  Every table had a different vase with a different design.  For flowers we used an assortment of greens (ferns, pods, thistles, hanging amaranthus and fiddleheads) with a mixture of whites (hydrangeas, roses, stock, lisianthus, dendrobium orchids and allium, etc).  The brides' bouquet was white and green and the bridesmaids' bouquets were all green with an awesome blue touch through the use of blue delphiniums.  All the bouquets and boutonnieres had burlap accents.

Congrats Travis and Meghan.  I am sure these two will have many fun filled years ahead!  All the best to you both.

Last weekend we had the pleasure of being a part of Mike and Sarah's wedding.  Sarah choose vibrant yellow and pink hues for her big day and wanted both shades incorporated into her flowers.  Her bouquet, white and yellow with pops of pink, consisted of tulips, orchids, ranunculus, and garden roses.  The girls' bouquets, yellow and pink, consisted of garden roses, orchids, tulips, billy balls, freesias and matsumoto asters.  I loved the Groomsmen boutonnieres: simple, vibrant and  bold against the suits.

Congrats Mike and Sarah.  Wishing you both many wonderful years to come.

Last weekend Hide and Seek had a fabulous time preparing fresh bright spring flowers for our wedding at the Marriott Resort and Spa, and was extra thankful the rain held out till after the ceremony.  The wedding colors were yellow and navy and Julia came to me requesting TULIPS in all the bouquets.  With that we went to work  making English style bouquets filled with ALL yellow tulips.  To add texture, the bouquets had an assortment of tulip varieties.  The girls' wore navy blue dresses so the yellow bouquets were an awesome "pop" for the ceremony.  Julia's flowers, of course the most beautiful, had white and yellow tulips.  All the bouquets were wrapped and accentuated with playful blue and white striped grosgrain ribbon from Ribbon Revelry.

For the reception flowers we used an assortment of white and yellow flowers:  hydrangea, tulips, ranunculus, veronica, freesia, scabiosa, pussy willows, etc.  The different blue and yellow patterned fabric accent / decor used through the reception, on the tables, gift bags, etc, were simple but a fun addition the wedding celebration.

Congrats again Justin and Julia!

"Modern Mid Century Inspired Art for Your Modern Home"

Happy Friday! I came across this photographer, Lucy Snowe and her shop on Etsy, lucysnowephotography.  Drawn to her unique style, "Modern Mid Century Inspired Art for Your Modern Home," I thought I would share her talent, especially with Mother's Day around the corner. Her floral prints would make a unique and modern gift for Mom to hang on the wall.

I think what I love the most is how she captures the delicate nature of this earth in such ordinary objects.  The simplistic forms in her photos are transformed into beautiful pieces of artwork.

Here are a few of my favorites.

Till next week, seek great design......

Paeonia Fabulous

Undoubtedly the feeling of being in love is by far the experience we all live for.  It is a state of mind where you silently scream at the top of your lungs  "get a hold of yourself!  Control your nerves!"  Well, every year when peonies start to bud and blossom, this feeling rushes through my soul . Their smell, fullness and lush beauty literally drops me to my knees.  As I plunge my nose into the delicious blooms I think "this is heaven!" Peonies are known as the flower of riches and honor. With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage. They are also the 12th wedding anniversary flower!

The short lived peony season, typically May through July depending on weather pattens, is over before you blink.  With international trade many wholesalers are now able to purchase peonies through Chilean farmers and ship the blooms to the States in November and December.  However, my best advice to other brides who share my obsession for this fabulous flower: plan a wedding in May, June or July so your dream of a peony bouquet filled with fuchsia, blushes and creams will be a reality.

These are the first peonies spotted blooming in the area, at the University of Kentucky arboretum.

Easter Centerpieces

Happy Easter everyone! Some days I am just infatuated with Martha Stewart, and today is one of those days.  All of her creative spring centerpieces are so tastefully done! Hope you can use some of this inspiration over the Holiday weekend.

A little 101 on Urban Design

As many of you know, my background, education that is, is landscape architecture. No that does not mean a profession that solely mows lawns, plants trees and picks out annual flowers for a garden. I often try to tell people the profession of 'landscape architecture' is the study and design of the horizontal. Architects work with structures, they work vertically, a landscape architect works across the land. They examine cities, neighborhoods and parks; make sure as a whole, a City is functioning. Landscape Architects often works alongside city officials to develop master plans which will help prepare a municipality for future development and growth. Cities need identity and Landscape Architects assist with developing these defining characteristics! They think about the larger picture that most cannot see.

Well with that little background, my husband and I, both designers, took a day trip up to Cincinnati to visit the neighborhood Over the Rhine. I had heard about the revitalizing efforts in this area and could not resist the urge to check out some of this awesome, talked about urban design. 5 years ago this area was rated the number one highest crime neighborhood in all America. Today that number has dropped to 24. Crime, prostitution and unemployment are still high but the hopes that this area will continue to improve are exponentially high. Hundreds of millions of dollars have flowed into the neighborhood introducing new residential units, office and retail space. Young people are moving back into the area and taking over the modern and eclectic lofts that compliment the upscale dining and bars.

All in all, I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this gem of a neighborhood. The architecture is stunning and unique, and the brick, row house structures of German decent just send me back in time. I daydreamed about having my flower studio in such a unique setting......ahhh....someday soon!

I encourage anyone who travels to Cincinnati to check out this neighborhood!
